Cowboy Capital of the World

Updated: Jul 4, 2023

I'm currently writing from Oakdale, California and the sign says it's the Cowboy Capital of the world. I am about 30-40 minutes away from SCC. I took about a week off from work for Richard and I's family visit.

California is one of the only states that still allows family visits for inmates. The inmate is responsible for ordering food for the stay, your family packs toiletries, clothes and cleaning supplies, and can stay anywhere from 30-72hours with your loved ones. We expected to stay in a small building near C yard where we can cook and stay together. Richard applied and had ours scheduled from 6/29-7/1. I bought a bunch of new items, packed two bags prepared with clothes, soap, toiletries, cleaning products, all non alcohol items and was ready for this trip.

I drove all the way up from San Diego California and when I arrived about 10am on Friday, I was informed that our visit was revoked recently and we would have to reapply. I had no notice, phone call or any idea it was taken from us. Richard was trying to find out that morning what had happened and the officers said I should of been informed. It was really disappointing. So I headed to a nicer town than Jamestown and ended up here in Oakdale.

Recently, Richard had been jumped for walking with too much commissary. Shortly after asking for medical attention, was thrown in administrative segregation for a week. Also known as, Ad Seg. Or the "hole". He was thrown in a freezing room for a week, with a little mat to sleep on, no blanket, in his boxers. The power had gone out once during that time for three days so he couldn't flush his toilet, there was no air conditioner and no outside contact or calls. He said it was the worst experience he had so far there and he felt like he was going crazy towards the end. He was so relieved to get out.

I am currently making the best of the situation, got a cozy hotel with a king bed. I got to adventure the town, see animals, and have enjoyed this time away from the busy city life.

I also made sure to visit Richard on Friday for several hours, Saturday we will have a visit for a few hours and tomorrow I see him on a Tuesday. For 4th of July, visits are allowed.

Once I visit I'll head back down to San Diego.

I also got to video visit Richard on Sunday. Starting July 7th, the CDCR prisons will remove the free video visits for Sundays and will now have three days of in person visits.

On my phone, I have a weekend alarm set every for 5:55AM to schedule video and in person visits. I know to have my laptop open with a few VSA logon windows and 2-3 browsers on my phone to hopefully get one before the website crashes at 6:01AM. All the adult institutions are having people schedule visits at the same times so this is a regular occurrence. I have been blessed to get visits, and Richard was given an iPad so he can now call me often again.
